Anne-Laure Wuillai
The artist translates the fluctuations, the alternating forms of ice, liquid or vapor while designating a totality. Transparency is measured by the transparency of the material where it is deposited. The container and the content cross in a game of mirror and the color is formulated as a simple hypothesis. Everything is captured with extreme precision, in an almost clinical gesture. Nothing disturbs a research that is always exercised in a fragile balance, in a precarious state when the slightest deviation would jeopardize the experience.
Each work is based on a moment of visibility for a silent meditation and even austere if it were not marked by this fluidity, at the moment when the material drowns happily in the color. Water is offered to us here in all its potentialities but, above all, the artist manages to seize its pure essence, from the formlessness from which it comes.
Scientific rigor and technical perfection coincide in an intense poetry, a rigorous reflection, to reveal the soul of things. […]
Anne-Laure Wuillai’s work does not describe anything, it defines the material. But perhaps it says something else, something more distant, something more serious. What Bachelard stated thus: “The knowledge of the real is a light which always projects some shadows somewhere”.
This darker part is not to be found in dreams but in the realities of the world. These sculptures-objects thus display the signs, or rather the stigmata of a threatened sea. The artist confides: “I like to think, with a touch of black humor, that one day there would be so much packaging in our oceans, that it would end up packing the entire sea. This water, it is a question of collecting it, of possessing it, as if through it we were taking over the world. Reality then confronts the dream. And it is in this interstice that the work is elaborated.
