Eva Vautier Gallery is pleased to present Yosef Joseph Dadoune’s exhibition Blancs (the artist’s second solo show at the gallery after Des Racines in 2018). The publication Blancs, edited for the occasion by Arnaud Bizalion, will be presented at the opening.
The work of Joseph Dadoune, born in Nice in 1975, lies at the confluence of video, photography, performance, drawing, architecture and social action. His work expresses his interest in the tensions between East and West, religious life and secular life, central power and periphery, or the real and the imaginary. Her work also resonates with colonial issues and questions of gender and identity.
The exhibition opens with the Found You series, an introduction that continues the artist’s exploration of the flower motif. But if, in 2018, during the previous exhibition presented at the gallery, the flowers drawn by Joseph Dadoune seemed wounded, intoxicated, almost violent, those of the Found You series offer themselves to the viewers charged with the intensity of the colors, the urgency of the gesture and a vibrant confidence of the artist in the encounter with the other, another “found”.
This wall of flowers transports us to an entirely white space conducive to meditative contemplation. The White series is indeed part of a new turn, initiated in 2019, with the use of new materials such as tar or marble, but also the irruption of white. While continuing his subtle and rich work on the material, which he tirelessly explores, Joseph Dadoune delivers here works apparently devoid of images, but whose evocative power is multiplied by the processes used by the artist: masked objects, evocative titles, etc. In these luminous works, something is there, invited to be (re)found.
The exhibition is experienced as a path from color to minimalism embodied by white, a journey between what is found and to be found again.
