The exhibition “White quails, grisettes and black egrets” develops the investigations of Natacha Lesueur around the representation of the human figure and more particularly female. The artist continues his explorations around the gendered appearance, its atavistic facades that we desire or that we are forced to display. Through interventions on distinctive identity markers, capillary and clothing envelopes, vehicles and symbols of the masquerades of femininity, Natacha Lesueur seeks to reveal the manifestations of the expression of a social and cultural constraint: imprints in the epidermis of the painful constraint of a garment, organic lesions applied to the capillary arrangements of the 50s and 70s, those of our mothers and grandmothers etc. “White quails, grey girls and black egrets” is built in mirror of the exhibition “Exotic tragedy” at the Municipal Gallery of the Navy in Nice, where the photographic and sculptural work based on the figure of the actress Carmen Miranda makes extensive use of color.
At the Eva Vautier gallery, the artist has chosen, on the contrary, to emphasize a kind of achromia in his representations. At the same time economy of means allowing a power of concentration and densification on the subjects, the black and white also confers this character of stock memory, and coincides with the will of a retrospective treatment of outdated and founding representations. The statuary effects, sometimes reinforced by the use of white body makeup in relation to the whiteness of the stone, participates in a sculptural vision of the bodies, in a highlighting of the constructed and normative character of the female stereotypes. Achromia underlines the close and recurrent link in Natacha Lesueur’s work between sculpture and photography. This relationship is evident in both exhibitions, particularly in his recent ceramic vase-head productions.
On Eva Vautier’s proposal, Natacha chose to invite Anita Gauran, whom she met at the Beaux Arts de Rennes, during her studies there until 2013. Under aspects that may seem simple, even fragile, Anita develops a complex, rich and subtle work. These works question the relations that art, anthropology, and archaeology in particular, can maintain. Borrowing plastic vocabularies from the disciplines they explore (different print techniques for example), she collects, assembles and reveals the permanence but also the recycling of ancient forms and gestures in the present time.
