Gérald's work is an interdependent association between a carefully neglected image with strong reference and a text diverted from everyday situations. The discrepancy between the two provokes laughter or a smile. Gérald's humor is often abrupt, sometimes black, emphasizing our humanity and our imperfections, sending us back to our own reflection through the prism of his vision. In addition to his new original works, he will present two works created together with the artist Caroline Rivalan, a graduate of the Villa Arson, as well as a limited edition specially designed for the occasion. His guest, Philippe Jusforgues, excels in the art of accommodating strangeness, it is in the world of collage and photography that he takes us.
"Of course, when I first saw Gerald Panighi's little vignettes invading an entire wall with a certain casualness, as if they were nothing more than banal Post-It notes, my gaze wandered over this dizzying atomization. There is much to see and read in Gerald's work. Immediately, but it's certainly a bit silly, I told myself that he must have binged on a lot of Strange like many boys of his generation and maybe even fell in his childhood on traumatic issues of "Detective" in which the blows, in spite of the hyper-expressivity of the individuals drawn by Angelo Di Marco, don't generate only onomatopoeias. At this distant time of his life, he perhaps also remained rather perplexed in front of the "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" of Magritte, an anti-tautology so seductive, after all... If the representation is not the real, the dissociation conjugated on the mode dear to the surrealists possesses an even more abstruse charm. Nothing more enigmatically bewitching than this assumed dysfunction of the image. It was appreciated in Magritte's work as it was venerated in the 80's, in the more trivial world of Glenn Baxter's illustration... The absurd is the occlusive answer to all the derisory speculations and it is precisely that which manages to be deliciously enjoyable without ever oozing the slightest pretentiousness in Gerald Panighi's creations. "

“Upon seeing Gerald Panighi’s works for the first time, evidently my eyes strayed to the stunning explosion of work casually invading an entire wall as if they were ordinary Post-Its. There is much to see and read in Gerald’s work. It may sound silly, but I immediately said to myself that he must have feasted on a lot of Strange as many boys of his generation and perhaps even read alarming issues of “Detective” in his childhood – where the punches, despite the hyper-expressivity of the individuals drawn by Angelo Di Marco, are not only onomatopoeic. In these early days of his life, he may have also remained puzzled by Magritte’s “This is not a pipe”, an attractive anti-tautology after all…
If the representation is not real, the combined dissociation of the process beloved of the Surrealists has a more abstruse charm. Nothing is more enigmatically captivating than the assumed dysfunction of the image. We enjoyed it with Magritte as we revered it in the 80s, in the trivial world of Glenn Baxter’s illustrations… The absurd is the answer to all occlusive, ridiculous speculation and it is precisely that that manages to be deliciously enjoyable (without the slightest pretence) in the work of Gerald Panighi.”
