Ben Vautier
Down with imperialism!
Fondation du doute, Blois
Curator: Eva Vautier
Exhibition Future
Fondation du doute, Blois
October 4 to December 14, 2025
Opening Friday, October 3, 6:30 p.m.
The Fondation du doute opens its 2025-2026 season with an exhibition devoted to the work of Ben (Benjamin Vautier, dit), who died suddenly in June 2024, curated by Eva Vautier.
Echoing the 2025 theme of the Rendez-vous de l'histoire de Blois ("France? ") and titled in reference to several of his paintings-writings, this exhibition follows the various paths taken by the artist to denounce all forms of imperialism, from his visceral questioning of French centralism to his criticism of the elitist, Westernist vision of Art or his fierce defense of so-called "minority" and "regional" cultures and languages, invisibilized under the colonialist impulses of supposedly "dominant" cultures.
The two-hundred-square-meter tour takes visitors on a dense and generous journey through almost seventy years of work that is both joyfully protean and terribly sincere, marked as much by the neo-Dada spirit of Fluxus as by the ethnist theories of the Occitan independence fighter François Fontan, to whom Ben was close.
The exhibition pays tribute to the power of critical thought, which went beyond aesthetics to challenge the anthropological and political foundations on which our contemporary world is built and decayed.
