The Fluxus Côte d’Azur 1963-1968 exhibition focuses on the only territory, from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer, where the Fluxus phenomenon was successfully grafted in France, first and foremost thanks to the vibrant personality of the artist Ben Vautier, his energy, his tireless and multilingual curiosity, his intuition and his sense of organization.
The exhibition presents the chronicle of the five years from the “Fluxus Art Total Festival” in the summer of 1963 to the closing of La Cédille qui Sourit in the spring of 1968, through the collections and archives of Ben and loans from Marcel Alocco. Following a chronological thread, the exhibition shows places, moments, events and works, and unfolds a gallery of protagonists where we find – alongside Ben Vautier, George Maciunas, Robert Filliou and George Brecht – Annie Vautier, Marianne Staffeldt, Donna Brewer, Robert Bozzi, Serge III Oldenbourg, Dany Gobert, Pierre Pontani, René Pietropaoli, Marcel Alocco, Robert Erébo, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, Joe Jones and many others…
This episode of art history approached through the prism of Fluxus, then very little known and even less recognized, is an opportunity to emphasize again the experimental and cosmopolitan dimension of the Côte d’Azur art scene, already highlighted by the exhibitions in deliberate life, a history of performance on the French Riviera at the Villa Arson in 2012 and about Nice at the MAMAC in 2017.
