From his distant and ephemeral engagement as a clown in a traveling circus, Jacques Fl\u00e8chemuller has saved in his impertinent and shifted painting, the art of the pirouette and the nose-thumbing. In other words, a smile and a casualness; a way to save appearances and to better cut through the illusory shell of a certain world. But if jubilation is the order of the day here, the luscious blondes he plants in a very glamorous campaign for a glossy calendar, one in a Chanel suit next to her horse, the other abandoned in an armchair against the backdrop of “Little House on the Prairie”, or this disturbing chimpanzee, in an elegant pipe smoker and with an all too human look, all remind us that the frontier between human and animal is tenuous, that you can’t teach an old monkey… Even when this Monegasque “by accident” paints Rainier with shirt sleeves rolled up and primates frolicking on his shoulders.<\/p>\n

,<\/span><\/p>\n

Revealed in 1981 in Paris by the Jeanne Bucher gallery, today divided between Brooklyn and the Ard\u00e8che, the artist is inspired by the 50’s to express with tenderness the emptiness he feels in a world that is too polished, too conventional. The smile then tightens, a puff of anguish insinuates itself in the hollow of the so serene illustration. We would like to see proof of this passion for “Les Pieds Nickel\u00e9s”, this comic book which at a time “bien-pensant” liberated the word of the comic strip, even if it was at the price of some bends to morality. And it is by borrowing the costume of Ribouldingue, the famous bearded man of the trio or the skeleton of Croquignol that he revisits some great masters such as Velasquez or Goya – in particular a drawing of Saturn-Ribouldingue devouring his children “borrowed” from the Spanish master – and pays them homage through derision. On the ice, a penguin can run on roller skates, a baby with a bottle balanced on his stomach can pretend to ignore that above his head black ink is dripping from a sentence whose characters strongly resemble oriental signs, the comicality of the situation makes us smile, the laughter remains in the back of our throat.<\/p>\n
